Indian’s beloved singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on 6 February 2022, from multiple organ failure after contracting COVID-19 and was undergoing 28 days of treatment at the Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. The Government of India announced a two-day national mourning and that the National Flag will fly at half-mast from February 6 to 7 throughout India in her respect.

Lata Mangeshkar was born in 1929, the eldest daughter of Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi and Konkani musician and his wife Shevanti. She got her early teachings from her father, maternal grandfather, and several maestros like Aman Ali Khan Sahib and Amanat Khan. She has sung memorable songs in films Pakeezah, Awaara, Aradhana, Majboor, Shree 420, Mughal-e-Azam, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. She is remembered for her iconic rendition of  “Aye Mere Watan ke Logo” which brought Jawaharlal Nehru to tears.

 

Her last full album was for the late filmmaker Yash Chopra-directed 2004 film ‘Veer Zaara’. Mangeshkar’s last song was ‘Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki,’ which was released on March 30, 2021, as a tribute to the Indian Army.

She was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1969 Padma Vibhushan in 1999, Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989, Maharashtra Bhushan Award in 1997.In recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2001,India's highest civilian honour and is only the second female singer, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honour. France conferred on her its highest civilian award, the Officer of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.
